resume critique & internship questions Jan. 7th, 2010 @ 11:39 pm
[info]x2xbandgeekx2x, posting in [info]graphicdesign
First, I just want to say that I've been lurking here for over a year I think, and it's been fantastic. I feel like I've definitely learned a lot reading about all your experiences.

Secondly, I've finally managed to finish my resume, and I'd really appreciate any feedback you might have on both design and content (PDF here, .jpg under cut). I'm a junior in college, and I'm really hoping to find some sort of internship this summer. I desperately need more design experience.

And on that note, internships! I'm a little out of my depth here. One of my friends went to Scotland last summer for a chemistry internship, which really got me thinking. I've never traveled out of the country before, and I feel like doing that would be a phenomenal experience for me on a personal level. On the other hand, chemistry majors seem to have websites that just list a ton of internship possibilities, a lot of them are with universities, and a lot of them are paid. I'm thinking the design field isn't quite so lucky? I've been trying to find internships somewhere in the U.K., but the only options I've been able to find are focused on actually going to the country, and just insist that they can find you an internship in your particular field. I think that sounds pretty iffy. Should I just abandon that idea completely and focus on something closer to home?

I've also done a little looking around my home in Ohio and I think I'm going to have issues on that note as well. I haven't been able to find anything remotely design related too close to home, and long commutes will be difficult since we only have one good car right now and I'm not in a position to be buying one any time soon. Is it feasible to try for something far away and just get an apartment for 3 months? Is there much of a chance these days of finding a paid internship? And any suggests for places to look?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm feeling pretty clueless (and yep, I've been going through the tags. Love this comm!).

Is there anywhere in Bloomington to rent a room or a small apartment on a weekly basis? You know, besides a hotel. And cheaper than a hotel.

In Need of Resume Help! Jan. 7th, 2010 @ 02:43 pm
[info]trendyneckwear, posting in [info]graphicdesign
Hi Everyone!

I was the one who posted the resume resources last time. I finally finished my new resume. First, I created a really ugly, simplistic one. Then I realized that .. 'hey! I'm a filmmaker, graphic designer and illustrator..' I need something bright and bold and fun. Guys, it took me a really long time realize this. I don't know why.

I have two resume versions: one that has bullet point descriptions and the other has a short paragraph for each work place. What do you think about this? I have been told by high school counselors and strictly people from school that resumes SHOULD be bullet pointed. However, I have heard from many industry people that sometimes a short paragraph is more engaging and easier to read. I don't know... opinions?

I need help on..
-design (typography and layout, basically everything in the white space) The characters on the top are pretty set. I don't want any feedback on those.
-content and typos ( Am I being unclear or vague? What is a better way to say something? and just grammar stuff would be awesome.)

Thanks everyone! I really enjoy this group :D

Magento Commerce question Jan. 7th, 2010 @ 10:40 am
[info]salvanos, posting in [info]php
I'm not sure if this is fully appropriate to the community; but I've had absolutely zero luck on Magento's own community forums so I'm going to try it out. Obviously I am having trouble with Magento, here is the scenario:

1.) I have "Site A" which has a Magento install that has been working for months w/o a problem.
2.) I have "Site B" which I just installed Magento on.

When I installed Magento on "Site B" somehow "Site A" was updated to reflect B. So instead of www.siteA.foo as the Base URL; now it's www.siteB.foo. Both sites have separate databases and web-based / ftp-based logins... but they DO share a single IP and use the cPanel web management system.

The two sites are so different in nature that I would prefer not to use one Magento installation with just separate stores, not to mention the first site (A) is already going to be DOING just that... so I'd prefer not to have 15 Magento sites that sell the same items under different company names... and then site B which is just the complete opposite.

The only theory I have is that the issue is they are on the same IP; and something in the Magento installation doesn't like that. Considering how popular this type of hosting IS I figure there has to be a way around it. And hence my post.

Best web design book you've read? Jan. 6th, 2010 @ 01:40 pm
[info]penella22, posting in [info]webdev
I just finished reading Steve Krug's "Don't Make Me Think" and I have to say--it's phenomenal. In part because it practices what it preaches in terms of usability. The book is as entertaining as it is educational. And it says some really brilliant things about how users experience websites, as well as how designers experience the process.

I also wanted to post a link to Smashing Magazine's article on 25 User Experience Videos although in all honesty I haven't watched them yet.

I'm wondering what books other people enjoyed reading as they learned the process of web development?

I'm also curious how much people focus on programing vs. usability issues. I know ideally we do both, but I feel like most web dev's I know are better at one or the other.

Making a wordpress header slide left? Jan. 5th, 2010 @ 07:11 pm
[info]toygasm, posting in [info]javascript
I need help with coding. I've recently designed a blog on Wordpress and it has to get up before Friday. I'm having troubles with making my header slide to the left (I have 4 headers and I want them to slide). I've been trying for about 3 days now.
I know I have to install and upload that JQuery plugin thing, but even though I installed and have been trying, it hasn't been working for me. Can anyone help me out?

Does anyone have a profile/account at Behance.net? If so how useful do you find it? I'm thinking of joining, and wanted to know what others thought about the site.

Website critique - Freelance business Jan. 5th, 2010 @ 10:11 am
[info]recycled_sales, posting in [info]graphicdesign
Some of you may remember I posted up a site a while back for critique. I've taken onboard what you all said (or what I could remember) and come up with this.

Obvious things to sort would be some letter spacing, especially on the contact info page. Telephone numbers on the samples page would either need to be randomised or obfuscated (unless anyone wants to say otherwise). Finally I do need to shorten the height of the bar at the bottom or put something else there to justify the height.

Apart from that, what opinions do you guys have?

Thanks.

I was also curious if a company could sport two logos?

1. is the T.F.H.F (initials) made into a figure (should I add spaces to indicate each letter?)

Question about file uploads Jan. 4th, 2010 @ 03:29 pm
[info]julisana, posting in [info]php
Wow, I'm posting a lot lately!

So I'm working on a script that will upload files to a server. Is there a way to specify what user the script uploads as, or am I just stuck with uploading as the "nothing" user?

I know I can chown it after the fact, but that just doesn't seem to work well.

Also, if I use chmod() on a directory, will the permission change also apply to all files within the directory?

Thanks!

Server-side find in files functionality Jan. 4th, 2010 @ 02:10 pm
[info]jaswinder, posting in [info]webdev
Hi guys,

I'd really, REALLY like to find some way to search for text in all files (eg looking for a particular string in all php files, so just doing a google search on the domain doesn't help) on a remote LAMP server I have no shell access to - only ftp and cpanel, so I guess I'm looking for some kind of php script? Neither cpanel's native file manager or any of the Joomla file manager plugins I've tried seems to have this functionality. I have no idea, I'm kind of stupid about server management, so what I'm asking may not even be possible.

This would save me so much time and frustration it's not even funny, because so far my only solution is to constantly download the entire public_html directory again and again and try to do a local find-in-files search.

"Work made for hire" agreement Jan. 3rd, 2010 @ 07:23 pm
[info]shutupmeg, posting in [info]graphicdesign
Hey everyone. I was hoping someone could shed some light on a freelance contract I've been sent regarding a logo. It's a standard "work made for hire" agreement that basically says that I relinquish creative rights to the work I produce for the company. What the agreement states is that my work is a contribution to a larger project (i.e. the game it's being created for).

According to the contract, I am still credited, and am allowed to display it in my portfolio. I guess my question is, is this common practice for freelance logo design? Is it normal for the company to take all copyrights and creative ownership?

Any tips would be appreciated. This is my first major freelance project, so I'm a little new to all the legalese. Thanks!

wordpress as homepage Jan. 3rd, 2010 @ 06:19 pm
[info]ficali, posting in [info]webdesign
So I've finally installed wordpress on another web project I'm working on but I can't quite figure out to make the wordpress directory as my homepage without messing everything up hehe.

Also thank you for your suggestions for my portfolio, I'm definitely redesigning it and since I now know how to use wordpress I'll install it.

Wordpress blog archives, comment link not working Jan. 4th, 2010 @ 12:01 am
[info]technicolorpuff, posting in [info]webdev
I don't know if this is okay to post here but I've never had a proper answer to a question I've asked over at the Wordpress forums. I've a problem with the archives in my blog. Whenever one clicks a tag or category you get directed to it. It used to be only excerpts and I hated that so I changed it. The comment link was also beside the title to I also changed that and placed it on the bottom of the entry. The comment link works properly on my main page but when I go to the archives it simply doesn't do a thing. Anyone know what I did wrong? I'm placing the php codes under a cut.

note: I know nothing whatsoever about php )

Here is the blog I am talking about.

EDIT: I've fixed my original problem somewhat: only the top post on the page is being directed to the comments properly, the other posts below are being directed to the comment section of the top post.

Graduate Graphic Design Thesis Projects Jan. 3rd, 2010 @ 12:05 am
[info]kisha, posting in [info]graphicdesign
I'll be taking my Graduate Thesis Orientation class in the Fall 2010 semester, and I'm curious to see some examples of written and visual projects (a few people in my class just finished the class and it sounded nightmarish. I'm hoping they're just being dramatic!).

Can anyone provide links (personal or otherwise) to Graphic Design Thesis projects? I did a search, but couldn't really find much. Thanks!

Looking for Help with Portfolio Jan. 1st, 2010 @ 06:36 pm
[info]ihorse, posting in [info]webdev
Hello everyone. I'm actually brand new to this community, so I apologize if something like this has already been posted here before. I couldn't be bothered to look too hard in the back entries, especially since it seems like there isn't really a tagging system here... Anyway, feel free to punch me in the eye if I'm being a lazy noob here. ;)

So I've been doing graphic design for several years now, but recently I've gotten more serious about it since I've decided that I want to transfer to a four year university with a graphic design program after I graduate high school this spring and get my associate's degree (I did running start, so I'm only a few quarters away from having my two year degree). This past spring I arranged an amazing deal doing a farm's website in exchange for horseback riding lessons, and that's been my first major website I've designed top to bottom. It was really eye opening, and I learned a whole crap ton that I hadn't expected. Before that I had a substantial knowledge of HTML and CSS and a little bit of Flash, but I knew nothing about FTP servers, domains, all that jazz. Anyway, now I want to do more web design, so I've started building a website of my own to start marketing my skills.
My questions for you under the cut )

Portfolio Website Dec. 31st, 2009 @ 01:47 pm
[info]ficali, posting in [info]webdesign
I've finally set up some sort of portfolio website for myself:
My server is being unusually slow today, So I took a screen shot of the website to get a little bit of a view:

http://www.strangedaysthese.com

I like how it came out, the overall design represents my graphic design style (slightly minimalistic, modern, futuresque, etc) but what can I do to make it more professional looking? My web design skills are not up to date since I've sort of left that field behind when I began studying graphic design. Any little appearance adjustments you would make to make this look slightly more professional than your standard elementary website?

Question about Arrays Dec. 31st, 2009 @ 09:51 am
[info]julisana, posting in [info]php
Hi guys, another dumb question!

Do things like in_array and array_search work properly in multi-dimensional arrays? Also, is there a way to specify which elements in a multidimensional array to check?

Thanks!

Imbedding a wiki in mysql/php Dec. 30th, 2009 @ 10:46 pm
[info]rohaa, posting in [info]webdev
Hey all, I'm looking for some help/an expert on a fairly tricky matter.

My site, Elfpath, is based on mysql and php. It has an integrated forum system, where people have to sign up only once to get access to all parts of the site.

I want to add a wiki to this system that has:
1) fully integrated signup, i.e. signing up to Elfpath instantly also signs you up to the wiki, and you only have to log in once to log in to everything.
2) fully integrated looks. I want the wiki to look identical to the rest of the site, including the side banner and top menu and colour scheme. Where there's text boxes in light beige now, there should be a wiki, the rest looks the same.

Currently I'm thinking of using mediawiki for this, but if anyone can recommend another wiki that would allow this easier, I'm all for it. I have no experience with either mysql or php (my webdev is on an extended vacation atm), so I would really appreciate it if someone could talk me through this noobie style, or give me some pointers in the right direction. What would be even more awesome is for someone to have a stab at our cpanel and make this happen. I'd be willing to pay E40,00 to get this done within a week.

Thoughts? Help?
